Denilson is a retired chemical engineer. Living comfortably, he resides with his wife in a luxurious apartment on the Leblon seafront in Rio de Janeiro a truly marvelous city.
His income comes mainly from a generous pension and a lifetime of savings.
In recent years, however, expenses have risen sharply because Adriano and Beth, two of his three children, have moved back home while they search unsuccessfully for employment.
Concerned about finances and bored with his inactive routine, Denilson became intrigued by a message from Irina, a beautiful blonde woman of Russian origin.
Irina showed a dream life. Living in San Francisco for several years, she flaunted a luxurious apartment overlooking the Gulf of the Farallones, yacht trips, and glamorous parties.
Everything caught Denilson’s attention not only Irina’s imposing beauty but also the lifestyle he believed he deserved.
But how had Irina achieved such a life?
After much insistence from Denilson, and many evasive responses from Irina.
She finally promised to reveal her secret during a call that same afternoon.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, more than 20,000 km away, Prabh wakes up once again in search of work.
Prabh is a young Indian interior design architect, recently graduated, married, and the father of a newborn.
He has been unable to find stable employment for the past five months.
But a LinkedIn posting could change everything:
“We need programmers… salary: 700 US dollars per week.”
The only issue is the location: the job is in Thailand. However, if selected, travel expenses would be covered by the employer.
It is an opportunity he cannot pass up. Prabh submits his résumé.
Less than a month later, after several interviews, he receives the news he hoped for: “Congratulations! You have been selected for the position!”
With great hope, he travels and soon lands at Bangkok International Airport. A driver meets him with a sign bearing his name and escorts him to a car, heading into a new chapter that will change his life forever.
But something happened.
Instead of heading into the city, the car takes a highway east of Bangkok away from where the company offices were supposed to be. Prabh calls his HR contact, who calmly responds: “Yes, don’t worry. I forgot to mention we moved last week. The driver is taking you to the new location.”
Meanwhile, in beautiful Rio, Denilson is ecstatic.
Irina has finally revealed her secret: cryptocurrency investment. Even better, after much insistence, she has agreed to introduce Denilson to the world of crypto trading, having him invest in the same service she uses, with herself acting as his personal advisor. And the results are incredible. In just one week, his initial investment of $10,000 has yielded more than $1,500 in earnings a 15% return. Denilson feels that life is finally falling back into place.
Back in Asia, Prabh is now lodged in a massive apartment complex. Nearly 10,000 young people are in the same situation. Before having his phone and passport confiscated, he managed to learn that the location is on the Moei River, which separates Thailand from Myanmar.
The first training sessions in his “new job” begin. Strangely, everything is taught by psychologists, and the courses focus exclusively on managing human relationships. No programming, nothing like the job description. But he tells himself, empathy is often worth more than technical knowledge nowadays.
That night, they are finally taken to what they believe will be their real offices. Perhaps things will become clearer there.
Rio de Janeiro. Denilson is devastated. Crying alone in the shower, he realizes he has lost all of his life savings. Crypto investments that had been so promising have suddenly turned against him. First, he lost $5,000. Trying to recover, he invested more losing $10,000, then another $10,000, then $50,000… until nothing remained. Irina the angel has disappeared. Along with access to the crypto-trading platform. Everything is gone. Denilson cannot bring himself to tell his family.
In desperation, he goes to the nearest police station. After filing his report, he is referred to the cybercrime unit:
“Sir, you were the victim of a cryptocurrency fraud using the Pig Butchering method.”
“What? I don’t understand what you’re telling me.”
“Yes, sir. This is a very common scam today. Unfortunately, there is not much we can do. I’m sorry to say that this person if she is even real is likely in a completely different part of the world. And the money is already gone.”
Outside, Denilson searches for the term on Google. The explanation feels like a stab at the heart: “Pig Butchering refers to a scam in which the victim is groomed over the long term through deception and gradually stripped of all assets. The name refers to the idea of cutting a pig into small slices.”
Denilson is overwhelmed, trapped, and helpless. How can he tell his family?
Meanwhile, Prabh is finally in the “offices.” The workday is 18–19 hours long. He sleeps on a thin 10-cm mattress on the floor with 80 others. The bathroom is outside, deep in a remote forest somewhere in southern Myanmar at least that’s what he guesses, having been brought across the border just a month ago.
He must meet strict quotas. Those who fail are publicly whipped in front of everyone who is forced to watch. Of the promised $700 per week, he has only been paid $30. The rest has been deducted for housing, food, and taxes. His passport has been confiscated. Escaping is impossible. As a last attempt, he begs to be released and sent home. The answer is immediate: He signed a one-year contract and breaking it would require his family to pay around $15,000 an impossibility for his wife and newborn, thousands of kilometers away.
But not everything is dark. Last week, Prabh was named employee of the week for exceeding his assigned goals. This earned him a one-hour break and temporary access to his phone luxury. Prabh uses the time to sit, and video call his wife via WhatsApp. She shows him their smiling baby. They laugh and cry together, better times will come.
The break ends. Prabh wipes his tears, returns to his desk, and logs back into the system.
He opens the application and enters his work username: Irina.
